Trip to Kagoshima (2)

pyroclastic plateau
a bit of pyroclastic plateau near Kagoshima airport

July 3, 2024

While I moved from Kagoshima airport to central Kagoshima City by bus, I saw a whitish small cliff from inside the limousine. I thought that it must be composed of volcanic ash deposition.

I remember I learned about the pyroclastic plateau in the southern part of Kyushu, which is called "shirasu" in Japanese, in a junior high school geography class.

On seeing the ground covered with volcanic ash with my own my own eyes, I began to wonder how wet-rice cultivation was introduced into the area during the Yayoi Period. It must have been much more difficult than in the northern part of Kyushu or almost impossible due to the very low ability to retain water of the soil.
